Long-term variation in the breeding diets of macaroni and eastern rockhopper penguins at Marion Island (1994–2018)

چکیده

Populations of the macaroni penguin Eudyptes chrysolophus and eastern rockhopper E. filholi breeding at Marion Island (Prince Edward Islands) in sub-Antarctic Indian Ocean decreased from 1994 to 2018. We examined their diets when rearing chicks during this period. There was substantial overlap two species, with crustaceans, dominated by euphausiids Thysanoessa vicina Euphausia vallentini, making up >80% number >60% mass over study The lanternfishes Krefftichthys anderssoni Protomyctophum tenisoni were most-commonly consumed fish diet penguins three 25 years (1994, 1998 2014); they also most commonly penguins. Macaroni more amphipod crustacean Themisto gaudichaudii lanternfish Electrona carlsbergi as well a greater diversity larger-sized than did horsefish Zanclorhynchus spinifer found amounts 1996 1997. Despite annual variations relative prey contributions diets, there no significant long-term changes either species period or compared an earlier assessment 1982. conclude that proportions these are unlikely account for recent declines populations.

At‐sea distribution and habitat use in king penguins at sub‐Antarctic Marion Island

King penguins make up the bulk of avian biomass on a number of sub-Antarctic islands where they have a large functional effect on terrestrial and marine ecosystems. The same applies at Marion Island where a substantial proportion of the world population breeds. In spite of their obvious ecological importance, the at-sea distribution and behavior of this population has until recently remained en...

Love thy neighbour or opposites attract? Patterns of spatial segregation and association among crested penguin populations during winter

AIM Competition for food among populations of closely related species and conspecifics that occur in both sympatry and parapatry can be reduced by interspecific and intraspecific spatial segregation. According to predictions of niche partitioning, segregation is expected to occur at habitat boundaries among congeners and within habitats among conspecifics, while negative relationships in the de...

Long-term breeding phenology shift in royal penguins

The Earth's climate is undergoing rapid warming, unprecedented in recent times, which is driving shifts in the distribution and phenology of many plants and animals. Quantifying changes in breeding phenology is important for understanding how populations respond to these changes. While data on shifts in phenology are common for Northern Hemisphere species (especially birds), there is a dearth o...

Energetics of diving in macaroni penguins.

Heart rate (fH), abdominal temperature (T(ab)) and diving depth were measured in thirteen free-ranging breeding female macaroni penguins. Measurement of these variables allowed estimation of the mass-specific rate of oxygen consumption (V(O(2))) while diving and investigation of the physiological adjustments that might facilitate the diving behaviour observed in this species. In common with oth...
